Short answer: on Android, open Settings and search "NFC" β if a toggle shows up, you have it; turn it on. On iPhone, every model from the iPhone 7 onward has NFC, and iPhone XS/XR and later read tags in the background without opening an app, per Apple's own support documentation.
Want a definitive, one-tap answer instead of digging through settings, plus a test against an actual tag? Our NFC Checker app shows hardware availability, on/off state and tag compatibility on one screen. If your phone does have NFC, NFC Write & Read Tags is the toolkit for writing, copying and automating tags.
Check on Android
- Open Settings.
- Search for "NFC" using the search bar at the top.
- If a result appears, tap it and switch the toggle on. Exact wording and location (often under Connected devices, Connections, or Network & internet) vary by manufacturer and Android version.
- If nothing appears in search, the phone does not have an NFC chip.
Check on iPhone
- iPhone 7 and later all include NFC hardware.
- iPhone XS, XR and later read NFC tags in the background automatically β no app needs to be open; just hold the top of the phone near the tag.
- On earlier supported models, an app that calls Apple's NFC reading API opens the scanner and you hold the tag to the phone while it's active.
- There's no manual NFC toggle in iPhone Settings the way there is on Android β NFC reading is a background system capability rather than a switch.
Troubleshooting Table
| Symptom | Likely Cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Android: no NFC option in Settings search | Phone has no NFC chip | Check the phone's spec sheet; no software fix exists |
| Android: NFC option exists but tag won't read | NFC toggled off | Turn the toggle on in Settings |
| iPhone: tag doesn't trigger anything | Phone held too far from the tag, or over a thick case | Move the tag to the upper back of the phone, near the camera, and remove thick cases |
| Either platform: tag reads as unsupported | Tag is a protected payment, transit or access card | These are intentionally not readable by consumer NFC apps; use a plain NDEF tag instead |
| Either platform: nothing happens near a known-good tag | A metal phone case, magnetic car-mount plate, or metal/foil near the tag is blocking the signal | Remove the case or metal object and try again |
